Todd Boehly has face to face contract talks with Mason Mount in attempt to break standoff

David Ornstein’s column in the Athletic always has a decent chunk of Chelsea news in there – which is no surprise given how many headlines we generate on a weekly basis.

The Mason Mount contract standoff has been one of the main threads in recent weeks, and today Ornstein has an update about the situation there. He reports that Todd Boehly has stepped in and had direct face to face talks with Mount about his future.

This is good news of course, but equally we’re surprised that it hasn’t happened already. The situation has got worse and worse and more fraught as time has passed, and the priority was surely to conclude this as early as possible.

Let’s hope that this direct effort resolves things – as Ornstein puts it, it’s “widely expected” that Mount leaves this summer if he fails to agree a new contract as the club look to cash in on their asset before it’s too late.

That would not be a sensible or popular move.
