“Unhappy players don’t achieve anything” – Chelsea sales about more than just raising money

The idea that Chelsea are going to have a major squad clearout this summer is well established by now.

It’s not just an idea, it’s an economic necessity. But there are other reasons to do it beyond just the financial side. As Mario Melchiot pointed out on ESPN, “unhappy players don’t achieve anything.”

You can see the former Chelsea defender make his point in the clip embedded here:

At the moment there are too many miserable faces being left out of the team, left off the bench or out of the Champions League squad entirely. As Melchiot says, it doesn’t help them and it doesn’t help Chelsea.

You can only put 11 players on the pitch in any case, so the bloated squad is doing far more harm than good. The sooner the unwanted and unhappy players are moved on, the sooner this team can actually start moving back towards being a functional organisation again.
