Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was asked on the subject of Mason Mount this week, with the last chance for the midfielder to play for the club where he was raised now closing in fast.
With no contract agreed – or even on the table by all accounts – the new ownership are ready to take a record breakingly unpopular decision and sell Mount this summer while he still has some value. They will effectively exchange all remaining good will with the fans for £50m or so.
The Chelsea boss had previously ruled out both Mount and his England and Chelsea teammates Ben Chilwell and Reece James for the season, but it seems that the midfielder still has a slim chance:
“Reece won’t be fit and Mason is going to be really tight,” the coach explained in his pre match conference for Sunday’s game.
From our point of view, it will almost be worse to see Mount come on as a late sub on Sunday. If that happens, we will be almost sure that it’s a gesture from Lampard towards the midfielder, who will therefore be making his last appearance as a Chelsea player.
Of course if he’s truly too hurt to play we won’t see him either way. We will learn a lot from his behaviour at full time and during what is likely to be a very sheepish lap of appreciation.
What a pointless “story.” No actual news, just lame speculation. Headline might just as easily have been “Mason Mount appearance on Sunday could mean it’s more likely to rain next Wednesday.”
