£18.5m fee won’t be enough to replace versatile midfield powerhouse

Widespread sources including Sky Sports are reporting that AC Milan have agreed an £18.5m deal to sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

It’s a deal that has dragged on for some time, with the sacking of Milan’s sporting and technical directors at the start of the summer blowing up the previous deal, which was almost done.

But the sale of Sandro Tonali to Newcastle has brought them back to the table, and things have been wrapped up quickly this time.

The €20m deal is a bargain for a player of Loftus-Cheek’s quality, but with just one year left on his contract Chelsea can’t really turn down a solid wedge of cash like that.

He’s proved a very useful and versatile option for us in the last couple of seasons, and will be a loss to our squad. It will be hard to find a better player to replace him in the team for less than the £18.5m we are getting.
