Brighton will get their £80m for Moises Caicedo – and potentially a lot more

Matt Law’s piece in the Daily Telegraph on Chelsea’s pursuit of Brighton midfielder from last night claims that the Blues are “in pole position” to negotiate a deal with the Seagulls.

The plain fact is this, explained clearly in Law’s piece: Brighton turned down £70m from Arsenal in January and are not keen to take anything less than that now. They want to keep the Ecuador star, and the piece reports that owner Tony Bloom reckons the midfielder is worth £120m.

Given the number of teams being convincingly linked to Caicedo right now – Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Manchester United – the Seagulls know they can comfortably hold out for at the very least £80m – and may well end up getting much more if a bidding war emerges between a few of those suitors.

So instead of trying to battle them down, perhaps Chelsea should just make an aggressive move and fire in an £80m bid now in an attempt to wrap things up quickly? There is a suggestion here that players could be included in part exchange, including potentially a move for Conor Gallagher, who we can see thriving in Roberto de Zerbi’s all action team.
