Brighton’s €42m sale is only going to make Chelsea’s life harder

Liverpool yesterday announced the signing of Alexis Mac Allister for a bargain €42m.

The Argentina midfielder has been top of their list for some time, and now finally will complete his transfer to Anfield. Indirectly, it makes Chelsea’s life that much more difficult. The Blues want to sign Mac Allister’s teammate at Brighton, Moises Caicdo. But now the Seagulls have had a fresh injection of cash, as well as losing a key cog in their team.

They will be more determined than ever to keep the rest of their exceptional group together, and their need to cash in is at an all time low after a year of making money on sales like Mac Allister’s.

Caicedo is going to cost a hell of a lot more than €42m  – prices north of €80m have been mentioned, and it seems likely that that it what it would take to persuade Brighton to sell.

His teammate for club and country Pervis Estupinan revealed the “fears” of those on the South Coast that their talisman would soon join Mac Allister on the way out:

“Having a player of Moi’s [Caicedo] characteristics, we all fear that he will leave,” he said in quotes picked by the Evening Standard.

“If he stays, I will be very happy to keep playing alongside him and enjoying his football.

“If he goes, I will wish him all the best because he is a good lad, a good professional and he is a machine.

“If he leaves, we will be opponents and all I’ll ask is he doesn’t give me a whack because he is very strong!”
