Chelsea could lose £30m on defender in 12 months – and may be happy about it

Chelsea outcast Marc Cucurella might be about to get a perfect exit option for him – and the club – with reports in the Daily Mail that Newcastle may be interested in a transfer.

It’s suggested that the former Brighton man is a target for the Magpies as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a campaign in the Champions League. He’s barely playing at Chelsea and getting him off the books would be a huge coup in reality. But the numbers don’t really add up.

Given we paid around £60m for him a year ago, that would mean a laughable £30m loss in 12 months. That’s probably the main reason the whole thing sounds very unlikely. But the tragedy is that plenty of Chelsea fans would happily take that loss just to get the Barcelona academy product off their books, and thereby create space in the squad for Ian Maatsen and Lewis Hall.

Given the way that this ownership are operating, we can well imagine they will fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy and persevere with Cucurella despite the fact that they have better options available already.
