Chelsea in contact with goalkeeper who would likely be the world record signing in his position

Reliable French sports paper L’Equipe are backing up rumours from elsewhere in the last 24 hours that Chelsea have made contact with AC Milan over goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The Blues need a new first team stopper and they like the look of Maignan, who has been absolutely brilliant for the Italian side this season.

He is nicely settled in Milan, but there are issues there. Sporting director Ricky Massara and technical director Paolo Maldini were sacked last weekend, and that has caused plenty of discombobulation in Lombardy – Maignan made a social media post which questioned the decision, and there’s a sense that having won Serie A and reached the Champions League final with the Rossoneri, he may think he’s reached the end of the road now.

That will in itself likely create problems. They will need to appoint a new sporting director who will have to make the final decision on bids like this – unless the owners are going to step in and make the call themselves.

The Italian side are in a strong position in terms of his contract, and given his quality and relatively young age, it would likely take a world record bid for a goalkeeper to secure him. Sadly, we’re not sure Chelsea have that kind of financial firepower available this summer – but we’ve been surprised before, and if we make enough sales for enough money, anything is possible.
