Chelsea make “good progress” on marquee summer deal despite huge £40m difference

Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard today has some interesting notes about Nicolas Jackson’s impending move from Villareal, but we’re especially interested in what he had to say about Moises Caicedo’s potential move to Stamford Bridge.

The Brighton midfielder is clearly our top target for that crucial gap in central midfield, but the Seagulls are tough negotiators and are happy to go to the wire to squeeze every last penny from us as the summer goes on and we get increasingly desperate.

Despite claiming that Chelsea are making “good progress,” Kinsella points out that our last bid for €£60m while Brighton want £100m. Even in the crazy world of Premier League transfer fees, £40m is a vast amount of money, and we will need quite a lot more “good progress” to close that gap.

Next week should be significant – if the outgoing deals for Kai Havertz and a couple of others are finalised, we will have a much better idea of what our squad is looking like and where we need to spend, as well as having a big chunk of that £40m in the bank…
