Chelsea’s desire to sign a central midfielder is well recorded. Their list of targets, however, has been pretty limited, from what we’ve seen.
The conversation always comes back to Moises Caicedo of Brighton and Romeo Lavia of Southampton. You hear other names mentioned, but not very convincingly. But today we have a very tempting link mentioned by Luca Bianchin in the Gazzetta dello Sport.
He claims that Newcastle are hot on the tail of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, and that Chelsea are watching and waiting in the shadows. The Magpies have first choice and a strong claim, but if they can’t get something done the Blues are close at hand.
€60m is mentioned as a base line fee, with Newcastle already expected to offer more than that. Our offer would be more complicated, likely involving some cash plus players involved in exchange – Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are here mentioned as potential makeweights, given Milan have already expressed interest in them.
This one is very distant and vague so far, but we love to hear another name at least getting thrown in to the ring. We’re tired of endlessly circling Caicedo, and having more options on the table just makes it harder for any one club to wring us dry when it comes to agreeing a fee.
If Milan genuinely do want Pulisic and RLC, this deal could yet work out superbly for both parties.
