Chelsea set to extend youngster’s contract before crucial loan

Charlie Webster is set to sign a new long term at Chelsea and will then join Heerenveen on loan, Nizaar Kinsella has reported in an exclusive in the Evening Standard today.

It’s a big moment for the academy star. A player’s first senior loan is always very important in determining their career path. Mason Mount’s move to Vitesse when he was a teenager worked brilliantly, and if Webster is able to play every week this should be a great stepping stone for him too.

It’s also an important moment for Chelsea, who have been concerned about losing young players on expiring deals. Webster’s current contract ends next summer, but this extension will allow us to loan him out while retaining his rights to play for us or be sold in the future.

Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven were reportedly interested in the youngster for a free transfer next summer, but they will be warded off by this development.
