Chelsea to “step up” efforts to make crucial midfield transfer

Chelsea desperately need a high energy midfielder in their team, and they are going to have to sign them this summer.

Their top option is clearly Moises Caicedo, but so far they’re been focused on raising funds by selling players. Now they’ve got a big bunch of cash coming in, they can move on to their incoming targets – and not a moment too soon. The Daily Mail report that the club will not “step up” their efforts to sign the Ecuador international, although that may not be enough.

It looks like Declan Rice will be heading to Manchester City, and that means Arsenal are left empty handed. They will surely move hard for Caicedo, and that puts Chelsea at risk. The Gunners are frankly just a more tempting destination for a player right now, and unless the Blues are willing to put mad money on the table, they will struggle to persuade Caicedo he’s better set coming to Stamford Bridge – which could well still be a circus next season.

Mauricio Pochettino has his work cut out persuading a lot of these top players that he is the man to turn things around at Chelsea, and that this team can be challenging Arsenal (let alone City) in the years to come.

May may yet be able to count on cash however. The piece claims Brighton want more than £80m, and if that amount rises to £100m, Arsenal may consider that too rich for them.
