Chelsea were prepared to sign former player despite disappointing season – until this crucial moment

The Athletic have just published a really long transfer explainer which summarises a lot of Chelsea plans for this summer, and has some really interesting details integrated.

One little slice of information about a player who they won’t be signing comes in the long section about striker they’ve targeted so far.

It’s noted that they “considering” making a move to sign Tammy Abraham, the academy striker they sold to Roma a two years ago. After a great first season in the Italian capital, the striker went off the boil a little this year, and ended a disappointing campaign with a Europa League runners up medal and then brutally – a serious knee injury in their last game of the season.

He will now be focusing on recovering, and Chelsea will be looking elsewhere. But it’s very interesting that that was a move even being considered at some point in the last few months.

His removal from our plans this summer will make some fans quite happy, as he was always a rather divisive figure considering he was a prolific academy player, and some Blues will want us to be aiming higher.
