“Exceptional” – Former Chelsea player tells club which goalkeeper to sign this summer

One of the key positions that Chelsea are looking to potentially sign in this summer is probably one of the most important positions on the pitch if not THE most important position.

As we know, there are some doubts over the future of both Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga, with the aforementioned looking most likely to leave out of the pair right now. So if that happens, Chelsea will be searching for a new stopper to come in, and probably to compete for the number one spot.

We have been seeing many links and rumours with potentially names, two of which is Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, and Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, amongst others.

Former Chelsea player Frank Leboeuf has been speaking about transfer targets and much more in his latest exclusive and extensive Chelsea FC column for Si & Dan Talk Chelsea this week.

The former Blues captain was quite clear in who he wants to see come in.

Leboeuf said: “[Emi] Martinez is a player you don’t like, but when he plays for you, you love him! He’s a great goalkeeper. I’d like to see him at Chelsea, but [Aston] Villa finished above Chelsea last season so I don’t know if they would sell him or if he would come.

But the goalkeeper I really want is [Andre] Onana. The season he just had at Inter is exceptional. You feel the calmness from him, you feel his presence, power, and the stamina of the guy. He never gives up, he’s always a good sport, he knows what he has to do. If I had to make a choice for new goalkeeper at Chelsea I would go for Onana. Martinez and Onana are different, but Chelsea’s defence need someone behind them who gives them confidence. Onana is just calm and does his job, he makes his team mates not worry, and I love that. Let’s see what Mauricio Pochettino wants and what he is going to do, and if it is possible to sign either of these names. I would be happy with Martinez or Onana, but if I had to make the choice, I’d chose the exceptional Onana. He’s been incredible since he was at Ajax.”
