Chelsea have just announced the signing of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig on a 6 year contract.
The France international has apparently cost us £53m, which seems pretty reasonable given we had apparently offered significantly more earlier last summer. By letting Leipzig keep hold of him for another year we seem to have significantly knocked down his price.
£53m barely buys you a full back these days, and getting the Bundesliga’s 25 year old top scorer for that has to be seen as a steal by us. We’ve done some very bad business in the last year but this looks like a smart deal.
He will basically be replacing Kai Havertz as our top creative option behind the striker (with the capability of playing up top if needed). If we can see Havertz for anything more than the £53m we’re paying for Nkunku, we would consider that a very positive trade for us. We can’t wait to see the new man in action.
