Incoming Chelsea target “may be worth £70m”

Spain is a good place to go shopping for football players because of the release clause inserted into contracts in football there.

It means there’s always a number you can put down which will get you the player you want, even if it is set prohibitively high. Everyone has their figure.

Sometimes it helps you to get real bargains too, when players develop faster than their existing deal caters for. That’s exactly what’s happened with Villareal striker Nicolas Jackson. He’s gone from nobody to hot target for Premier League clubs so fast that he’s still on a very modest salary with a very modest €35m release clause.

That should allow Chelsea to snap him up pretty fast, and as Villareal’s CEO pointed out, it could be a real bargain for the Blues if Jackson achieves his potential:

“Jackson is a player with great potential, and he may be worth £70m in the future,” Roig Negueroles told AS.

“Now this is the contract that he has and the clause that he has, and I don’t think that amounts like that should be underestimated.

“He’s been very impressive, although being a forward who scores so many goals creates so much more of an impact.

“He was a player whose potential we saw but who we knew was lacking goals, like he had in the academy. What he has done these last 10 games has been spectacular, and in a way unexpected.”

Combined with the bargain £53m we’re paying for Bundesliga top scorer Christopher Nkunku, we could be about to revolutionise our whole attack for relative peanuts.
