Latest attacking signing a mystery – could be a first move to strengthen Strasbourg

This summer was supposed to be one of consolidation for Chelsea as they pay for the excesses of last summer – but they’re not slowing down yet it seems.

From nowhere, Nizaar Kinsella is today reporting in the Evening Standard that the Blues are in “advanced talks” over signing Angelo Gabriel, a young winger from Santos in Brazil.

After breaking into their team as a 16 year old he’s established himself as one of the top prospects in the football mad nation, and Chelsea are apparently closing in on a deal worth £15m or so.

The club are really building quite the crop of young wingers – we’re not sure where 18 year old Santos fits into our plans long term – he could perhaps be the first player bought with our new affiliate club Strasbourg in mind. That’s what Kinsella speculates in his article, and it does explain quite well an otherwise quite mysterious move.
