Super agent working hard to find goalkeeper a club – no takers at €75m

Chelsea’s need for a top class goalkeeper has been clear for some time, but so far there has not been a huge amount of action on that front this summer.

It seems that the Blues were interested in Mike Maignan of AC Milan, but have been warded off by the Italian club who are putting up strong defences. It’s a similar story with Andre Onana of Inter – they seem more amenable for a sale, but we have been put off by their €50m asking price.

There is one other big ticket keeper on the market – Diogo Costa of Porto.

An interesting report from A Bola today says that three top clubs interested in a goalie this summer – Man U, Chelsea and Bayern Munich – are being sold the stopper by super agent Jorge Mendes. But at a €75m asking price, none are biting. We can’t say we’re too surprised.

He looks a good player, but there’s nothing that puts us off buying someone more than knowing that they’re being pushed by Mendes. Given the disaster of our last expensive keeper purchase (which is still haunting us now) we can understand our reluctance to spend big in that position again.

But as it stands, we’re getting ever closer to entering yet another season with a far from optimal setup between the sticks, and that could cost us seriously once again.

Perhaps things will heat up once we’ve bought a midfielder – but it’s looking increasingly like another year of Kepa.
