Tottenham’s decisive move makes Chelsea’s transfer mission clear

Reports today are claiming that Tottenham are closing in on agreeing personal terms over the signing of David Raya from Brentford.

Fabrizio Romano has just Tweeted that they are “on the verge of reaching an agreement” with Raya over a contract. Hugo Lloris has had a long spell at Spurs but is clearly coming to the end of his time there.

There is still a major question of agreeing a transfer fee with Brentford, who are asking for a heavy duty £40m. Spurs won’t pay that, but it sounds like they will find a price somewhere a little lower.

Raya has been one of the goalkeepers most strongly linked with Chelsea, and if he goes that will make our mission this summer that much more clear. It will leave Mike Maignan and Andre Onana as the outstanding options who are vaguely available.

They will both be expensive, but if Brentford are asking that much for Raya, they don’t seem overpriced at all. It will likely come down to probing both AC Milan and Inter and seeing which is more willing to play ball.
