Two French teams chase Edouard Mendy – why Senegal stopper could be easy to sell

Recent days have seen rumours spread about Kepa Arrizabalaga keeping his place as Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper next season. That’s a pretty chilling prospect for any Blues fan who has seen him play regularly in the last few years.

Getting rid of him isn’t our only problem – we’ve also got his erstwhile replacement Edouard Mendy to shift.

The good news is that unlike with Kepa and his monster wages, there seems to be some interest in Mendy. RMC Sport today refer to potential transfer moves from both Monaco and Nice in the offing.

Monaco are a particularly interesting option considering they are without a first team goalkeeper now that Alexander Nubel has departed. Nice have Kasper Schmeichel on the books, but he’s looked shaky and is well into his 30s now.

This is only the very early stages, but the fact that Mendy never upgraded from his original deal at Chelsea is promising in terms of selling him – he’s still on the original wages he agreed to in 2020, meaning he’s not on an impossible to shift salary like Kepa.

With just one year left on that deal we won’t get a great deal of money for him – but it’s another important part of our clear out, especially as we look for a new first choice keeper ourselves. There is a lot to get through this summer, but this could be one of the easier deals to organise.
