“Wanted by three different clubs” – Chelsea hold out for massive £75m fee

Nizaar Kinsella in the Evening Standard is reporting on Real Madrid’s interest in Kai Havertz this summer, and in his piece today he claims that Chelsea will ask for £75m for the attacker, aiming to recoup the £75.8m they paid to Bayer Leverkusen to buy him in the summer of 2020.

It’s a lot to ask – Havertz has basically had 3 disappointing seasons since then, but Chelsea believe that the amount of serious interest in the Germany international will support such an asking price. Kinsella claims that Havertz is “wanted by three different clubs this summer,” although he only mentions Madrid by name.

We would expect Bayern Munich are one of the other two, and the third could be anyone, although one would imagine it’s a team in Germany or Spain rather than the Premier League.

If it’s true that there are indeed three interested parties we can imagine the Blues holding out for  a sum that big. However so far we’re only hearing credible links to Real Madrid, and if they remain the only serious bidders, we will struggle to get anywhere near the reported £75m sum.

On the other hand, with Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio all off the books at once, Madrid have a vast tranche of their budget freed up, and this is the ideal time to sell them a player who can potentially fill in for all 3 of those departed forwards.
