Edouard Mendy is moving closer and closer to a transfer to Saudi Arabia. Chelsea will get a decent fee for a player who is never featuring, and will also clear his wages off the books a year early.
Most Blues fans are pretty happy about that – one person who is not is Stan Collymore, the former Liverpool player.
In an exclusive column on Caught Offside, he pointed out that he was very worried for Chelsea that this meant that Kepa Arrizabalaga will now be unquestioned starter. He savaged the former Athletic Bilbao player’s mentality and physicality and his suitability for the Premier League:
“Edouard Mendy looks to be on his way to Saudi Arabia so it seems Mauricio Pochettino is happy to go into the new season with Kepa as his number one, but that’s going to be a problem in my opinion because the Spaniard is weak – he isn’t physically or mentally strong enough to be the Blues’ outright number one.”
Well, we would be worried about that too – and we’ve heard some whispers that that could be the plan. But we’ve also seen significant interest in players like Andre Onana, so let’s hope that the plan is actually for Spaniard Kepa to be second choice, not first choice like Collymore fears.
