Why Armando Broja won’t go to Brighton, and why Seagulls won’t sign Conor Gallagher

Ben Jacobs’s exclusive Substack column for Caughtoffside has some interesting updates on two of the more minor transfer interactions going on behind the scenes at Chelsea right now.

While all the focus is on the big names and big moves, there’s Brighton interest in two Chelsea squad players – Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher. But as it stands, neither move looks like happening.

They clearly have interest in both players, but there are different limitations holding them back according t o Jacobs. With Gallagher it’s a simple financial problem. Whether Chelsea want to sell him or not, whether the player wants to go or not, whether it would be a loan or a permanent deal, it’s all moot. The Seagulls simply can’t match the wages the midfielder wants in any case. It’s a non starter, it seems.

With Broja, it’s a reluctance on Chelsea’s part. They want him in the squad this season, and after missing his chance to play regularly because of his ACL injury, he seems to be keen to finally get a shot. Things could change as the summer goes on if Mauricio Pochettino comes in and decides he loves or doesn’t like Broja, or if the Blues sign an alternative.

Both can play an important role this season if Pochettino takes a liking to them, and we can see both really thriving in his system if they are given the chance.
