Why Chelsea are willing to sell 32 goal attacking midfielder for as low as €50m

It’s transfer season and German insider Florian Plettenberg has found a Chelsea related story he can really get his teeth into.

He has contacts in Kai Havertz’ camp and has led the reporting the whole way on the growing links of the attacker to Real Madrid. Those links intensified enormously in the last 48 hours as it became clear that Karim Benzema would be leaving the Spanish club.

After the initial rush of creating the links, today Plettenberg adds more detail. He claims that part of Chelsea’s willingness to sell comes from the fact that Havertz is currently not willing to sign a new contract that runs beyond his current deal which ends in two years.

This makes now the peak time to sell him to protect his value, and Plettenberg names an asking  price at between €50m and €60m, plus bonuses which are sure run to the millions too.

It’s noted that Havertz is not considered a like for like Benzema replacement either. But with Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio also leaving this summer, Madrid are in need of reinforcements all across their attacking line. He has 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 games at Chelsea, and we would expect him to boost that significantly were he to move to La Liga given the average number of goals per game scored by Madrid is so much higher than the number scored by Chelsea.
