One stumbling block over the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea manager is the fact that he’s a very popular former Tottenham boss. Of course in the modern game you can’t be too precious about these things – it certainly didn’t stop Spurs appointing some of our old bosses – but it’s still a potential sore point, especially if things get off to a rocky start.
The club and Pochettino himself know that, and it was no coincidence that he made comments like “Chelsea is the greatest team in England in the last 15 years” in his introductory video.
In the end, he will live or die by his results on the pitch, but until then he can only try to give himself as much leeway as possible with the fans by soothing our egos and making sure we are all in no doubt that despite his history, he’s a Blue now.
