Chelsea will not get offers for £65m man, no matter how “open” they are

Caughtoffside are quoting reports from Nathan Gissing that Chelsea are “open” to offers for Marc Cucurella, the left back they signed a year ago for £65m.

We’re not surprised – not only has the Spaniard been poor in the majority of his appearances, he’s also playing in a position where we’re overloaded with cheaper, younger, better talent. We’ve got Lewis Hall and Ian Maatsen both competing for minutes behind Ben Chilwell – begging the question of what on Earth we were doing buying Cucurella in the first place a year ago.

We may well be “open” to offers in – fact we’d think we’re desperate for them. But who is going to make an offer we can accept? Just as with Kepa Arrizabalaga and many players before, we’ve backed ourself into a financial corner that we’re not willing to dig ourselves out of.

Let’s just pray that these new sporting directors are more willing to cut their losses than the previous lot.
