EXCLUSIVE: “It is true…” – Romano reveals surprising Man City interest in struggling Chelsea defender

This time a year ago Chelsea had just wrapped up the signing of Marc Cucurella, and were smug that they’d beaten Manchester City to his signature.

Here we are a year later and we’re desperate to get rid of him, almost managing to shift him on loan on deadline day but otherwise left scratching our head about what we can do with the left back.

But way back in January it seems there was already momentum towards moving him on. Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive column for Caughtoffside claimed that Manchester City, 6 months after missing out on him in the summer, returned in January with a loan bid:

“It is true, however, that Manchester City approached Chelsea at the beginning of January with a loan proposal for Marc Cucurella. It also included a buy option clause, not mandatory. Chelsea rejected as they wanted to keep Cucurella at the club, and since that moment nothing else happened with Cucurella and Man City.”

With Cucurella having signed for so much money and on such big wages it’s going to be very hard to shift him permanently, and like so many others of our failed big money signings it seems like a strong of loans before being ushered quietly out of the back door is the most likely path now.
