Tammy Abraham playing for Roma.

Tammy Abraham return rumours remind Chelsea of just how badly they messed up striker situation

Caughtoffside today carry some translated rumours from Italy about a potential swap between Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku (on loan at Roma) and Tammy Abraham (sold from Chelsea to Roma, and currently out injured).

Lukaku has scored 3 in 3 for Roma and seems to finally be warming up again. He could get 10-20 Serie A goals no problem this season.

We’re not going to take the rumour too seriously for now. These swaps rarely happen, and as we saw with Lukaku’s summer saga this year, shifting him is a monumental task.

But it’s this rumour that brings home just how foolish it was selling Tammy two years ago.

We said at the time that selling Tammy would be an issue in the short term, and it was. It has now become clear that it was a bad idea in the medium and long term too.

There were plenty of people with plenty of valid concerns about whether Tammy would ever be truly world class. But he didn’t have to be. He just had to be a better option than Lukaku, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Jackson. So far, he without question would have been.
