The stat that shows why Chelsea fans still have faith that this can be a good season

Chelsea have not had great results this season – they’ve managed one win, one draw and two defeats in their Premier League games so far.

Yet they’re still looking quite a lot better overall than they did a year ago. That’s in large part down to the fact that, despite still struggling to score, they’re creating good chances.

This season, according to FBref, they have topped 2 expected goals in every game bar the first, where they managed just 1.4 against Liverpool. Meanwhile our opposition have been kept to less than 2xg in each game.

That’s a marked improvement on last season, where they regularly went on runs of games without managing to reach 2xg per game.

If they can continue creating goalscoring chances at that rate, they will be just fine. It’s easy to see why there’s still positivity around despite dreadful results so far. Eventually some of those chances will go in, and the pressure comes off our defence a little.
