Young Chelsea defender celebrates Premier League bench place with new contract

Alfie Gilchrist has signed a new two year contract, with a club option for a third year, Chelsea have just announced on their official website.

The young centre back, currently captain of the U21 side and having appeared on the bench for the first team on Sunday, has now secured a place in Chelsea’s exciting youth project for the years to come.

After establishing himself in the under 18s two years ago, Gilchrist earned a professional contract and now has that extended and upgraded.

Alfie joined the club as an under 11 and is a boyhood Chelsea fan, so this is an extra special moment for him. He spoke a little bit about what it meant for them:

“When they call you in and tell you you’re getting a new contract, it’s a big achievement, and especially being a Chelsea fan and loving the club so much. It’s extra special.

“My whole family are Chelsea. My dad still comes with me now, my grandad also loves Chelsea. They used to have season tickets, but I can help them now!

After this season captaining the U21 team, we expect Gilchrist to go out on loan next summer to build first team experience – but we could yet see a January move, as we did with his predecessor Bashir Humphreys a year ago.
