Chelsea leader hints again at retirement – club set for leadership vacuum

Thiago Silva’s future at Chelsea is looking increasingly limited.

Every week brings a new hint from the defender that this could be his last season, and this week his words, quoted by Fabrizio Romano, almost say openly that he will be leaving the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

“The end of my career is getting closer… it’s not easy.

“You’ve to think about when you want to retire, where do you go as final club, the family, my kids play at Chelsea…

“I’m just focused on enjoying my final year of contract at Chelsea. I don’t know what’s gonna happen next year but I’m very happy of my career.”

Silva’s levels have dropped in the last 18 months, but he remains a titanic figure in the dressing room, with outsized importance given the youth of the squad around him. By the end of this season we will be hoping that other players are able to step up and fill the void.

Ben Chilwell and Reece James can’t stay fit, Conor Gallagher was for sale just a couple of months ago.

Enzo Fernandez better step things up with his English lessons, he’s going to be a key presence in the dressing room going forward, it seems.

  1. Then we need a right & left back (oh, we have them in house) and we need a center back (oh, we have them in house). Why are we so desperate? For Christ sake let’s try what we have to see what we have instead of putting it online what we think we need.
