Chelsea may have to double £50,000 a week wages to secure emerging key player – opinion

We’re in the funny period of the season where the summer transfer window is far behind us and the winter window is still some way off. This is the stage when the focus is on contracts and squad management, and it seems that’s the case at Chelsea too.

TalkSport are today reporting on the situation with Conor Gallagher, who is coming to the end of his deal. They say that he’s “open to signing a new contract.” Who could be surprised by that?

The midfielder was up for sale all summer, and the club even appeared to accept bids from him on transfer deadline day. But he chose to stay, and he has since proved himself an indispensable part of the first team, let alone of the squad. He’s captained up regularly in recent weeks, too.

He wouldn’t have done that if he wasn’t determined to earn a new deal at Chelsea, and we’re delighted one is on the table. Let’s get this move wrapped up so we can start looking ahead to more difficult decisions in terms of incomings and outgoings.

Spotrac have him listed on a wage of just £100,000, and one would have to imagine that he’s going to double that now that he’s proved himself such a favourite for Mauricio Pochettino, and given him homegrown status at the club.

You wouldn’t be able to say he hasn’t earned it. His loyalty on and off the pitch has slightly embarrassed the club, and they should do all they can to get Gallagher and his many supporters in the stands back onside by giving him the kind of deal he deserves.
