It never felt quite convincing that Robert Sanchez was going to be Chelsea’s number one forever.
The club were buying buying £100m superstars throughout the team, so it seemed unlikely that Brighton’s backup stopper, bought on the cheap after losing his place on the South Coast, was going to be their long term goalkeeper solution.
He’s a punt on a recommendation of Ben Roberts it seems, and so far it’s been a mixed bag. We’ve seen some great saves and some superb aerial confidence we’d not seen for years with Kepa in goal, but we’ve seen mistakes too.
So we’re not surprised to see sources like CaughtOffside claiming that we maintain strong interest in other players – in this case Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia.
The Georgian has proven himself as an absolutely top keeper over the last few years, and we can absolutely see Chelsea making a move for him next summer if Sanchez doesn’t establish himself fully before then.
