Cole Palmer in a blank shirt.

“He’s playing like he’s here for ten years” – Pochettino finds bright light in dark of Chelsea gloom

We’re trying to find good things to talk about from yesterday’s game. There’s not much to go for, but the performance of Cole Palmer was a shining light.

Mauricio Pochettino clearly came to the same conclusion, as he chose to speak in great detail about the attacking midfielder when given the chance by the press after the game:

“He’s showing a great performance, character and personality. You know, it’s always about the team and when you don’t win. For sure he is disappointed and we are all disappointed,” Pochettino said in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“We are happy in the way he arrived. He arrived in the last moment of the transfer window, he’s playing like he’s here for 10 years and showing his character and personality.

“[…] You create expectations when you sign a player but of course, I cannot say I did expect that. If I say I expect I am lying. You always feel the player when you have the player. From day one when he starts to train you start to see the talent but the team needs time to be much better.”

Palmer did nothing wrong in the defeat yesterday. We just need his teammates to get on his level. That chance which was so perfectly set up by the former Man City midfielder which fell to Marc Cucurella to hit directly at the goalkeeper will frustrate us for a long time.

If we keep pressing on, and we find some players who can put the beautiful opportunities Palmer creates away, we will be just fine. Until then, there’s plenty more pain to come.
