Mystifying Malo Gusto decision hurts Chelsea in attack and at the back

It was an odd team selected by Mauricio Pochettino on Saturday, and we were left wondering why Malo Gusto had been left out, with Axel Disasi playing at left back.

In the end, Disasi is not a right back, as he proved with some bad positioning and slow reactions to Brentford’s first goal. He’s not much use going forwards either, so once our early spell of pressure ended, he felt like a spare part until Reece James replaced him.

Of course, Gusto is not error free himself – in fact part of the reason he wasn’t in the team on Saturday may have been as a punishment for switching off late in the game against Arsenal and allowing the Gunners to equalise.

But at least he would be providing enough attacking impetus to really help the team out in the attacking direction, and we might have got the goals we needed to end the game early.
