You couldn’t make it up…
This Chelsea ownership have been widely mocked by those outside the club for their unoriginal work in terms of recruitment, both for staff and players. Their policy has been reduced to “just get whoever is doing well at Brighton.”
They’ve outdone themselves here though. Paul Winstanley was the last head of recruitment we poached from the Seagulls, and he’s now identified his own successor as someone who he wants to bring in to Chelsea.
Sam Jewell got the job when Winstanley came to Chelsea, and now the Blues want him too, in what Sam Wallace of the Telegraph describes as a “global scouting role in charge of negotiations.”
We’re not sure how this fits in to a crowded setup already involving Winstanley, Laurence Stewart and various other recruitment types, but clearly Jewell (son of former manager Paul) is highly regarded in his field and Chelsea are keen to not miss out on him.
Let’s hope it goes better than some of our other business with Brighton…
