“Downed tools” – ESPN pundit delivers scathing verdict on Chelsea’s Carabao Cup performance

Craig Burley has criticised Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and the rest of the Chelsea squad following the Blues 1-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

It was a huge missed opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino’s men with Liverpool having to rely on a number of youngsters from the bench due to key players missing through injury, but that still wasn’t enough for the Blues as they failed to get one over on their Premier League rivals.

The London club could quite easily have won but got punished for wasting a number of guilt edge opportunities with some of the best falling to Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher.

Burley a former Chelsea player himself was critical of the Blues expensively assembled midfield and their team mates for downing tools.

Fernandez endured a difficult afternoon in his first final for Chelsea and at one point was seen venting some of his frustration at goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Speaking on ESPN Burley felt Fernandez was a passenger, and said of the midfield duo: “Caicedo and Fernandez and others are just stood by and watching these kids have their moment and that’s down to Chelsea.”

“That is down to Chelsea, who basically, for some reason in extra time, downed tools.”

The Blues now have to try hard to pick themselves up as they prepare to face Leeds at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night with preparations for that game getting underway today.
