“He was never forced to sign anything” – Transfer expert clears up Mudryk saga

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has said that Mykhailo Mudryk “wanted the Arsenal move” last year but he is fully focused on Chelsea.

Mudryk joined the Blues in January 2023 following a protracted transfer saga but had been widely expected to join London rivals Arsenal.

There have been some claims that the 23 year old had been crying on the phone to Arsenal as the deal fell through but Romano has insisted the Ukrainian was happy to join Chelsea.

Speaking in his exclusive daily column with CaughtOffside he explained there was no real issue and the key thing was that Arsenal never managed to agree a fee for Mudryk.

He said: “There have been some reports circulating that stated Mykhailo Mudryk was really disappointed not to get a move to Arsenal just over a year ago, but I think it’s important to remember that he was never forced to sign anything, so he accepted that as Chelsea were happy to have him, and also were the only ones to agree on fee with Shakhtar Donetsk.”

“Of course, Mudryk wanted the Arsenal move, it was already public how much he wanted that move at the time, but now he is fully focused on Chelsea and I’m not aware of any plans for the summer either.”

The Ukrainian international has found life difficult at Stamford Bridge so far and has struggled to make an impact in the limited opportunities he’s had.

He was back in the starting lineup last night and scored in Chelsea’s 3-2 win against Leeds United and will be hoping his performance has done enough to convince Mauricio Pochettino he deserves a run in the side.
