“If it comes to penalties I’m a little worried” – Former Chelsea star gives Carabao Cup final prediction

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has given his prediction for the Carabao Cup final between the Blues and Liverpool.

The Premier League giants will face off at Wembley with the first silverware of the season up for grabs and potentially Mauricio Pochettino’s first in England.

For Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp the Carabao Cup represents the first of four possible trophies as he prepares to say goodbye to Anfield at the end of the season.

Melchiot who made 164 appearances for the London club has predicted that Chelsea will crash the farewell party and win a first League Cup since 2015.

Speaking on Sky Sports News he said: “Look, this is a final. On the day of a final it’s not always the team that is in the best form that wins.”

“I have to say I think Chelsea maybe have the opportunity, maybe that is the fan talking. I’ll go for 2-1.”

He added: “If it comes to penalties I’m a little worried so they have to get it won in the game.

“Liverpool is the favourite. I guarantee they have their chances. But Chelsea can squeeze a 2-1 victory.”

Chelsea will be hoping they can put a stop to a poor run that has seen them lose their last five Wembley finals and win only one of their last seven.

A win on Sunday would also be the first under Todd Boehly’s ownership just like it was for Roman Abramovich in 2005 when Jose Mourinho led the Blues to a 3-2 win against Liverpool.
