“No goal, no header, no mid-range shot, no dribbling… a crazy sum” – Ecuadorian media can’t believe Chelsea bought €116m midfielder

Usually, a smaller country which produces a big name Premier League player ends up treating their prodigal son as a national hero.

But in the case of Moises Caicedo, the most expensive football in Ecuador’s history (by such a large margin that you could add up most of the remaining top 10 and not reach his vast transfer fee), it seems his domestic press are a little lukewarm.

El Universo have just published a pretty damning piece which looks back on his first month as a Chelsea player following a €116m move from Brighton:

“A crazy sum for a midfielder… with no goal, no header, no mid-range shot, no dribbling… it sounds strange… that a club has agreed to pay such a huge amount for a “worker.”

“A player who hardly ever gets into scoring position cannot be priced above great strikers. When you pay $146m for a player you expect him, if not to be a genius, at least to have a minimally adequate performance. And Moises has not had that so far.”

Frankly, we agree with most of that. We needed a player with Caicedo’s profile, but it feels like there were better options out there for half the price. And how can you spend so much on a player who doesn’t score goals when a lack of goals is your team’s main issue?

Even if he goes on to be consistently excellent for us, could we not have signed him for a lot less? Time and again we bowed to Brighton’s demands. No wonder they thought they could ask what they like.

  1. As usual, SuperFrank talks out of both sides of his mouth, lol! He was as breathless as anyone in insisting that we buy Caicedo. Such a hypocrite!

Now, as is his MO, he repeats this story unfairly maligning one of our guys just to stir up controversy and fish for clicks. It’s truly unbecoming of a Chelsea supporter, especially when he you give no credit to Caicedo whatsoever (who was one of the league’s top ball winners for Brighton.

    1. SuperFrank, this is fake news. You quote an article on an Ecuadorian news site and you don’t even provide a link directly to the article, instead you provided a link to the news site’s homepage. I read an article where El Universo is stating that the English media has been, and continues to be, very harsh on Caicedo because of how much Chelsea paid (which is no fault of his). Stop wasting everyone’s time with these nonsense articles.

  2. No, we couldn’t have bought him for any less because Liverpool had offered £111m for him & so to get him we had to outbid them & offer £100m + £15m add-ons.

Caicedo was not brought on to score goals (although he did provide an assist recently), although he can when he is asked to (look at the goals he scored for Brighton and the Ecuador national team). He has excellent positioning, vision, and he’s a beast of a defender. Stop wasting everyone’s time with these nonsense articles.

    2. Liverpool is a rival team that was never going to spend that for caicedo. They played poker and Chelsea fell for the bait. I’m Chelsea fan and hated that we even offered 90 in the first place. He really offers nothing special, Chelsea has had great defensive midfielders that would have put alot of shame to both caicedo and enzo. Caicedo is not even half of some of the average CDMs Chelsea has had like Obi Mikel let alone the likes of Ramirez, essien, makelele, kante. Forwards like Malouda put in better defensive effort than caicedo has done so far.
