Steve Nicol is a Liverpool fan, and he doesn’t always see the situation at Chelsea clearly, but even he today called for a change that a lot of Blues fans have asked for for a long time.
Thiago Silva’s injury meant that Levi Colwill partnered Axel Disasi in the middle of defence, and it was a decision that worked out brilliantly. The pair looked really strong against Man City’s fearsome attack, and were able to play much higher up the pitch.
Nicol pointed to this as the obvious future of the defence, something many fans have wanted all season as Silva has struggled at times, and the team has struggled to defend high up.
“Levi Colwill… this playing him at left-back thing… I hope Mauricio Pochettino realises what he’s got now. This pairing has shown what they’re capable of, so how about you stick with them?”
Even when Ben Chilwell was back fit, Colwill had to wait for this injury to Silva to get his chance.
Now he’s got it, will Pochettino see the same thing everyone else is?
