Joe Cole feels there are similarities between Chelsea’s situation now and when he won the League Cup under Jose Mourinho in 2005.
The Blues are gearing up for the first final of the season against Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday as they look to win the League Cup for the first time since 2015.
Chelsea beat Liverpool 3-2 in Cardiff in that final to give then Blues boss Jose Mourinho his first trophy at the club and Cole will be hoping Mauricio Pochettino can follow suit.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website the ex England international said: “There are definitely similarities between the situation now and when we won the League Cup in 2005.”
“It was the first chance of winning a trophy under Jose Mourinho and he then went on and had huge success with Chelsea. Obviously, there is a chance of a first trophy for the new ownership group and for Mauricio Pochettino.”
Cole added: “I think people can be very quick to compare and we perhaps shouldn’t do that, as this team is a lot younger with less experience than that Chelsea side, and obviously, Liverpool are flying at the moment.”
Chelsea have a great history in the competition having won the trophy five times but haven’t lifted it since 2015 and lost their last two appearances in the final against Manchester City and Liverpool both on penalties.
The Blues will be hoping to shake off their recent poor record at Wembley having lost the last five finals they have appeared in there.
