“There’s a wider problem” – Journalist hits nail on head with Chelsea issues

One journalist has hit the nail on the head at Chelsea right now when describing what the issues are at the club.

The Blues squandered a chance to win The League Cup against Liverpool yesterday afternoon with their opponents massively depleted in personnel and missing a number of their regular key starters. To add to that, they ended up having to field a largely young team of players who had rarely even played senior football to see out the game in extra time.

Liverpool are never going to be easy to beat, but this was a golden opportunity for Chelsea to win silverware, and they will not get a better chance to beat Liverpool in a final than they did on Sunday. It’s a wasted opportunity no matter what excuses anyone wants to try and throw out there.

Journalist Ben Jacobs, writing in his exclusive and extensive Chelsea column for SPTC today, his the nail exactly on the head with his bit of analysis.

Jacobs said: “The intricacies of the game say it was a close final with all kinds of talking points, and on another day Chelsea might have won. But there’s a wider problem: Chelsea’s mentality in extra time was not that of serial winners, and it needs to be if this project is going to work. Yes, that takes time to build, and I do think it’s important to understand this, but what speeds up the process is winning a trophy and Chelsea unfortunately spurned a golden opportunity to do exactly that.”
