Chelsea have “initiated discussions” over elegant attacking midfielder – but the rumours don’t add up

Football Transfers are suggesting that Chelsea “have initiated discussions” with RB Leipzig about a potential move for Dani Olmo.

In general we’re amazed that Olmo is still at Leipzig. He’s a quality player, and it felt even two years ago like he needed to move on to a top club to reach his potential.

We’re just not sure the Chelsea move adds up. The suggestion in this piece is that he will come in as a replacement for Conor Gallagher, but given how much Olmo would cost, it doesn’t seem like a sensible switch. The club would only dig themselves deeper into financial issues by selling a cut-price Gallagher and replacing him right away with a player likely to cost more.

There’s also the Christopher Nkunku situation – we bought him from the same club a year ago, he plays a similar style and we’ve barely seen him yet. Until we know what we’re doing with him, it’s hard to see the sporting directors investing in that same position again.
