Simon Johnson’s piece in the Athletic today is a nice one, all about rising star Donnell McNeilly, whom Johnson points out is the top scorer at the whole club.
The youngster has worked his way through the under 16s to the under 18s and under 21s, top scoring all the way, and has been training with the first team during this international break.
But at the end, Johnson notes there’s an impending issue – McNeilly’s contract has little over a year to run, and a new one needs to be sorted. It might not be easy. The young striker will see players like Deivid Washington, Dujuan Richards and Jimmy Jay Morgan being bought and slotted in to the pecking order ahead of him and decide he would stand a better chance of first team action going elsewhere.
Perhaps this would be a good chance for Mauricio Pochettino to give him a couple of minutes in the first team to sell him the dream?
