We’re now into the final third of the season, and it’s interesting to take a glance down the list of players who have been used the most and see what it tells us.
One thing you can say for sure is that our lack of depth in midfield caused by injuries has really hurt us. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th most used players in all competitions are Conor Gallagher, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, all of whom have 30 starts or more.
We’re sure if we’d had a fit Romeo Lavia all year each of those players would have played 5 or so fewer games, and would be looking a hell of a lot fresher right now.
In games like those last week, Mauricio Pochettino simply hasn’t had the options to change things up, and Caicedo and Fernandez in particular are looking worn out.
The next central midfielder in the list of minutes played is Lesley Ugochukwu with just 5 starts, a huge difference.
