Malo Gusto is looking like he’s going to be the latest in a rich Chelsea tradition of attacking full backs.
Following in the footsteps of Marcos Alonso on the other side of the pitch, Gusto looks like he’s going to contribute hugely to our attack. He’s already beaten cult favourite Alonso in one important stat, and will shatter his total at the club.
According to FBref, Alonso’s best single season record for assists was 5 in all competitions. He managed that in the 2018-2019 season and in the 2020-2021 season.
Gusto on the other hand has 8 this season already. Not only has he got the chance to double Alonso’s single season record if he grabs a couple more, he’s also already made it almost halfway to the Spaniard’s Chelsea career total of 19, despite having started just 21 games for the Blues.
The Frenchman will have to do well to match Alonso’s incredible 29 Chelsea goals of course many of them in big games, but as long as he’s providing assists at this crazy rate, the goals aren’t as important.
Who cares whether he matches Alonso’s goal output. Gusto is already a FAR, FAR better defender! Let’s not forget that Alonso really only flourished as a wingback and was found out so often in a back four that he was ultimately dropped and then sold.
