Questions over £107m man’s athleticism are very worrying – Chelsea need a team solution

An interesting article in London World today has questioned whether Enzo Fernandez is really cut out for the Premier League. It claims he lacks the “athleticism” to really compete “in a league that mostly requires power to go with skill and finesse.”

We’re not so sure about that. Enzo is hardly N’Golo Kante, it’s true. But does he need to be? He’s got more than enough legs to play his part, he just needs those around him pulling their weight, and a structure that allows him to play his game without also requiring him to screen the defence.

That appeared to be what Moises Caicedo was bought for, and if the Ecuadorian isn’t the right choice to play that role, then it was his purchase that was the mistake, given Enzo arrived first. Caicedo has great energy, but perhaps lacks the positional discipline and the temperament to be a shield for a shaky back 4.

Enzo is never going to be an all action running machine – but he doesn’t need to be. He just needs to be in a team which has complementary players which allow him to play to his strengths. We paid £107m for him (CNN), we would certainly hope he’s ready to play in this league.
