“The rules need to change” – Paul Merson unhappy Chelsea may have to sell 24 year old star

Paul Merson has claimed it’s not right that Chelsea may need to sell Conor Gallagher this summer to help with Financial Fair Play.

The Blues have tried to sell Gallagher on numerous occasions following the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in May 2022 but a move has never materialised.

The 24 year olds current deal expires in 2025 and there have been no significant talks over a new deal which has led to constant speculation around the England internationals future.

Chelsea have really struggled this season and find themselves sitting in 11th in the Premier League despite spending vast sums of money to put the squad together.

More spending is expected in the summer as the Blues look for a top class striker and a replacement for Thiago Silva who is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Chelsea’s owners will be keen to avoid any issues with FFP and are expected to fund any signings through the sale of homegrown players like Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah, Ian Maatsen and Armando Broja.

The potential sale of Gallagher hasn’t gone down well with Chelsea fan Merson who told Sky Sports: “The rules need to change, and they need to change very quickly because someone like Chelsea probably have to sell Conor Gallagher, who is one of their own.”

“And, they will sell him for £50m or £60m, and then they will be allowed to buy a £100m player from abroad. That shouldn’t be right. Why change the rules when you have got to probably sell one of the best players, a homegrown player? You would rather go, well, it hasn’t worked with some of the other players.”

Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear he wants Gallagher to stay and the midfielder has also expressed his desire to stay at the club.

  1. Conor is the only player who has performed well the whole season ,sirlley selling three or four for maybe the same as a group more those who have not contributed any where near his enjoyment and leadership when involved.when he’s not on the field we have lost winning games mostly allowing the opponents more time and space when he either not even started or been a second half substitution.
