Former Blues striker Tony Cascarino believes that Reece James is one of very few “top talents” at the club right now.
Chelsea used to have a team full of top quality players including the likes of Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.
However, the Chelsea of today is a far cry of that with the club having expensively put together a squad of young players with huge potential but lacking in experience.
It’s perhaps one of the main reasons as to why Mauricio Pochettino’s men find themselves in the bottom half of the table and facing the possibility of missing out on European football for the second consecutive season.
Pochettino does still have some very good players to call upon with the likes of Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez impressing this season.
Cascarino feels that other than James there aren’t many other top players at the club and speaking on talkSPORT said: “What great player can you talk about at Chelsea now? One player you’d go, ‘What a great player. He’s making the difference.’”
“You can talk of players like Conor Gallagher , Conor Gallagher’s doing well, you can talk of Reece James. When he’s fit, he’s a top talent, but you had that in every position at Chelsea at their best. Every player was a top player with 50, 40, 60 caps.”
The Chelsea captain is currently recovering from a hamstring injury which has limited him to just eight appearances this season but the 24 year old is hopeful of making his comeback before the end of the season.
